Makhmud is a math teacher at a small village school in Kyrgyzstan. This area is unique, in that it is mainly inhabited by Chinese Muslims known as Dungans. In China, they are more commonly known as the Hui.
The Dungans fled Northwest China for Central Asia in the late 19th century after the failure of their revolt against the Qing dynasty. They are a very closed community; there are only a few people who have accepted Jesus as their Lord.
Daniel moved to this village and befriended a number of local men. In the course of his life and ministry, Daniel and Makhmud met for a while to read the Bible. Sadly, Daniel died of a heart attack last year, but he left a good mark and memories in this village.

Later, when the village community came together a year after the funeral to remember Daniel, as is traditional in Muslim societies, Makhmud was one of the people who spoke. He told the other villagers about the Bible study with Daniel and how it had shaped him. And then he called on devout Muslims to read the Bible if they want to have a better understanding of the important teachings about life and faith that are hardly mentioned in the Quran.
How to Pray
- Pray for the Dungans in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, that ministry work amongst them will bear fruit.
- Pray for the Bible translation team currently working on translating the whole Bible into Dungan.
- Pray that the work can be completed and that the Bible will be a great blessing for the Dungans. Ask that God would raise up near-culture workers from China or Central Asia to work amongst the Dungans.
